Cost cuts dressed up as education benefits

Published Date: 1 January 2009

Letters to the editor ...

Isn’t it sad to hear Scottish Borders Council is going to make yet more cuts in the education department budget.

This is grim stuff, considering the same council has spent close on £30million on consultants for a single-line railway track from Edinburgh to Tweedbank.

This is no small amount of money which could have been put to better use. Part of that could have ensured a healthy education budget while not affecting its primary function – i.e. the education of our children.

The other part, £20million plus, could have been used to build something like 300 affordable homes, which could have been sold to young couples and so enabling them to get a foot on the property ladder, therefore giving employment and help to our much-beleaguered building trades.
