The Educational Institute of Scotland

Scottish Borders Local Association

The Educational Institute of Scotland was founded in 1847 and is the oldest teaching union in the world. Queen Victoria granted a Royal Charter to the EIS and among the powers conferred was the power to award a degree of "Fellow of the Institute". The EIS remains the only trade union which awards degrees.

In Scotland the EIS represents about 80% of teachers and lecturers working in all sectors from nurseries through primary and secondary schools and up to colleges and universities. The union also represents other groups such as nursery teachers, QIOs, instructors and educational psychologists.

The EIS Local Association in Scottish Borders has over 800 members working in the nine secondary schools 65 primary schools and two specialist units. We also have members in the FE and HE sectors at the various sites of the Borders College and Heriot Watt's Campus in Galashiels.

We're hoping to develop the website to make it useful source of information for EIS members. We'd like to include sections on conditions of service, local agreements and so on. This will take time - some of us have jobs to go to...;-) - but if you have any suggestions, then please let us know.

In the meanwhile we'll roll out pages as time permits...

the next holiday starts at the end of the school day on Thursday, 30th June, 2011
there are -1 full working days to go...;-)

(or even less than that, if you have any local holidays!)
