Claiming Your Tax Rebate...
Letters should be addressed to: HM Inspector of Taxes
You should quote your NI number and the amount that you wish to claim against tax - the relevant figures are shown below and vary depending on whether you pay by Direct Debit/Credit Card or whether you use the SBC 'check-off' system. The Direct Debit (or Credit Card) figures are based on monthly payments - those who pay at intervals other than monthly will pay slightly less than this...but don't worry about it...;-) Those who work part time pay half these rates and supply teachers pay a third. Unless you've opted not to, then everyone pays the Political Levy. Whenever the phrase 'political levy' is mentioned, we are always at pains to point out that this has nothing to do with funding any political party, but quite simply allows us to fund campaigns which might, in times of conflict, be deemed by the Courts to be of a 'political nature' - a legacy of the last Tory government which is unlikely to be repealed by the present one...;-( The figures in the table are all annual amounts, so you should add the total that applies to you, including the LA subs and Political Levy as appropriate...
The Figures...
You should quote the amounts that you've paid over the last six or seven years
in your letter. You are entitled to have two thirds of your EIS subs set against
tax and you can expect to get about a quarter of this by way of a refund...
